Abstract:This paper examines the practical challenges in delivering information to customers derived from wave data. HR Wallingford uses wave data as an input to a range of services delivering information to customer groups including the military, rail operalors, engineering contractors and shipping companies. In order to make these services cost effective the service infrastructure needs to be flexibie to accommodate a range of wave data supply inpuis (modelled, measured and remotely sensed) in a range or representations (time series, grid series, climates, images. The precise data supply I represenation will be dependent on the data coverage at a given location. To overcome this we have adopted methods to 'virtualise' the data input to our services such that it is more efficient to add a new data supply. In this paper we discuss the challenges and advantages in adopting this approach and what implications this has on the need of a unified wave data service.
